weeks, the 340-ton

endured a long,
traffic-ridden journey to the museum
— and that with so
much to do in the
heart of LA, you
won’t have to.

Flores, Picasso’s Weeping Woman, and Chris
Burden’s Urban Light — comprised of more
than 200 restored antique streetlamps — are
among the masterpieces worth tracking down
in the museum’s outstanding modern and
contemporary collection.
With so much to explore, it’s a good idea to
scan the online menu of special exhibitions
before arriving. This summer, step into the
mind of Stanley Kubrick (through June 30),
one of our greatest directors, or explore the use
of light in art in James Turrell: A Retrospective, a
truly unique physical and optical experience
(through April 6, 2014). Other special exhibitions feature the work of Henri Matisse, Hans
Richter, Stephen Prina, and renowned Japanese
printmaker Katsushika Hokusai.
Traveling with family? The next generation
of artists is never in short supply (children under 18 receive free admission). LACMA’s
creative playground includes an art-making
gallery, interactive artworks, and special Sunday activities. All ages will enjoy watching
Chris Burden’s Metropolis II bustle to life. The
kinetic sculpture is comprised of intertwined
miniature freeways and train tracks, a reflection
of frenetic modern city life.
There’s always more to a great arts community than a single museum. Within walking
distance: the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar
Pits, the Peterson Automotive Museum, the
Craft and Folk Art Museum, and the A +D
Architecture and Design Museum.
Afterward, head back to LACMA to grab a
cocktail at the Stark Bar or dinner at Ray’s,
voted by Esquire as one of LA’s best farm-totable restaurants. On summer evenings, catch
free jazz on Fridays, Latin on Saturdays, and
classical music each Sunday. Enjoy the phenomenal sunset views, including Michael Heizer’s monumental
