Session photos (from top) by nathan nowak, Jennifer fukutomi The John Anson Ford Amphitheatre was originally built in 1920, a 1,195-seat marvel carved out of the Cahuenga Pass. Here, the rugged beauty of the Hollywood Hills serves as backdrop and inspiration, a lush contrast to the theatre’s grand Judaic architecture. The other portion of the complex features an 87-seat indoor theater. Indoors or out, there’s not a bad seat in the house. And on a summer evening, a festive atmosphere reigns as concert-goers picnic and enjoy the scenic, intimate setting. Operated by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, the Ford reflects the county’s tremendous diversity in its programming, which ranges from dance and musical performances to film screenings and multicultural events. For example, this summer features the Viver Brasil Dance Company, a tribute to jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell, and Indian dance theatre. The Ford is family friendly, too. Every Monday night during the summer season, the Ford hosts J.A.M. Sessions, a free interactive music and dance series where all ages and levels of experience are welcome. Saturday mornings in July and August bring Big!World!Fun!, onehour multicultural music, dance, and theater performances for kids ages four through 12 and their families.
