Tinseltown’s Star Movie and TV memorabilia get the spotlight at The Hollywood Museum. M By cheryl craBtree any first-time visitors to Hollywood begin their tours at the Walk of Fame. But the best place to start is just a hundred feet away. It’s The Hollywood Museum in the historic Max Factor Building, Tinseltown’s official museum, where Marilyn Monroe became a blonde and Lucille Ball first donned her famous red hair! Donelle Dadigan, founder and president of the 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, bought the landmark art deco building (where the legendary makeup king had worked magic on stars) in the early 1990s and guided a sevenyear restoration. Opened in 2003, the museum contains the world’s most extensive collection of film and television memorabilia. Over four exhibit floors, experience 100 years of Hollywood legends, past, present, and in the making. See treasures from Monroe (including her million-dollar honeymoon dress), Elvis, Gone With the Wind, I Love Lucy, Superman, Star Trek, Jaws, High School Musical, Michael Jackson, and George Clooney, plus cars of the stars including Cary Grant’s Rolls-Royce. Tour the vintagephoto gallery and see Hollywood’s beginnings, from Mary Pickford, “America’s Sweetheart,” to Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Exhibit highlights include Planet of the Apes, Jurassic Park, the 50th anniversary of the Walk of Fame, Judy, Kate — and all the greats! See a new Harry Potter exhibit including the magic broomstick, wands, and more. One more stop: the Dungeon of Doom, devoted to horror movies. Walk the same steps as Jodie Foster did to Dr. Hannibal Lecter’s jail cell in Silence of the Lambs and check out his iconic mask — all part of your historic day in Hollywood! 1660 north highland avenue los angeles, ca 323.464.7776 thehollywoodmuseum.com exit the metro red line at hollywood/highland station. see map on page 169; more information at metro.net. photos courtesy of the hollywooD museum From bottom left: the museum’s restored art deco lobby; Cary Grant’s 1965 RollsRoyce; Dungeon of Doom exhibit usairwaysmag.com June 2013 117 http://www.thehollywoodmuseum.com http://www.thehollywoodmuseum.com http://www.metro.net http://www.usairwaysmag.com
