While the museums are the Getty’s public
face, the Getty organization is an international
force in the art world, thanks to the Getty Conservation Institute, the Getty Research Institute, and the Getty Foundation.
The Getty Conservation Institute works to
advance conservation practice in the visual
arts through research, education, applied field
work, and the dissemination of knowledge. At
any given time, Getty conservators might be
teaching artisans in Italy the proper techniques
for conserving fragile paintings on wooden
panels, or training local workers in the maintenance of ancient Roman mosaics in Tunisian
archaeological sites. The institute provides
the research, expertise, and training for free,
promoting the best practices in conservation.
The Getty Research Institute (GRI) fosters
art-historical research and maintains special
collections on the history of art and visual culture. The GRI hosts visiting scholars each year
and recently acquired the archives of the late
architecture critic Ada Louise Huxtable, as well
as the archives and library of the Swiss curator
and art historian Harald Szeemann. This year,
the GRI launched the Getty Research Portal™,
an unprecedented resource that provides free,
unrestricted access to digitized art and architectural history texts in the public domain from
contributing institutions around the world.
The Getty Foundation provides grants to
individuals and institutions committed to
advancing greater understanding of the visual
arts locally and abroad. This year, it launched a
grant initiative to examine modern architecture
in Los Angeles, continuing the momentum of
the original Getty-funded Pacific Standard
Time: Art in L.A. 1945–1980 initiative, a
groundbreaking collaboration between more
than 60 Southern California cultural institutions. On view throughout the summer, Pacific
Standard Time Presents: Modern Architecture
in L.A. examines the postwar-built environment
with exhibitions and programs at 17 arts institutions in and around the city.
“In many cities, individual arts organizations are highly competitive with one another,”
notes Cuno. “LA is unusual in that arts organizations here are very open to cooperation. That
allows us to facilitate city-wide collaborations
like Pacific Standard Time, which has been
enormously beneficial to the arts locally.”
