Special Delivery Beverly Hills’ historic former post ofﬁce sees new life as a performing arts center. BY BRIAN COOK W hat do you do with an empty, nearly 80-year-old former postal facility? When it’s in Beverly Hills, you turn it into the newest cultural attraction. Named in acknowledgement of a lead gift from the Annenberg Foundation — an educational charity that backs a wide variety of nonprofit ventures — the project will transform an entire city block into a dazzling contemporary space for professional theater, theater education, dance, music, and other activities. “Beverly Hills has long been a hub of worldclass dining and shopping,” says Lou Moore, the center’s executive director. “This will add a vibrant, unique cultural destination to the heart of this legendary city.” The marble-clad Grand Hall of the post office will serve as the main lobby, guiding visitors into the adjoining, state-of-the-art, 500seat Goldsmith Theater. With an eye-catching copper-tone exterior and an interior accented with sculptural wood, the Goldsmith will be a first-class production venue that complements the architecture of the historic post office and features an intimate setting, ensuring patrons are never far from the performers on stage.
