terrace perfect for casual dining, relaxing, and special gala events. Located in front of the Goldsmith’s striking glass facade, the sculpture garden will be an attraction unto itself with stunning artworks and quiet pathways. Pre-show and during intermission, guests can enjoy refreshment service from a unique indoor/outdoor bar; nearby, a gentle tier of steps connects the garden to the Promenade Terrace. The extensively renovated post office building will also play a starring role as home to many of the center’s activities. The centerpiece will be the Studio Theater — formerly the mail-sorting room — which was specially designed with collapsible seating that will accommodate up to 150 guests. With its high ceilings and multi-use adaptability, it’s perfectly suited for small productions, cabaret-style entertainment, workshops, student performances, rehearsals, and special events. The main building will also house a professional theater school for young people, with year-round classes and special summer sessions; the box office; a gift shop; cafe; and administration and production services. Appropriately, period artwork accents the entire scene: Eight rare Depression-era fresco murals crown the walls of the Grand Hall, capturing a powerful period of history and portraying the country’s labor force, including the work of the postal service. Access to the complex will be enhanced by a three-level underground parking garage. Echoing environmentalism’s mantra of “reuse and recycle,” the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts is a sterling example of historic preservation done right, a thoughtful melding of timeless architecture and modern design.
