And in the spirit of academia, the Hammer never shies from provocative conversation. In fact, the museum offers more than 300 free programs to the public — including screenings, performances, discussions, and presentations — that cover a staggering variety of topics. In its ongoing Hammer Forum series, experts discuss the issues dominating the news cycle (recent topics have included “the Politics of Extremism” and “Fracking and Keystone”), while the Hammer Conversations series pairs two creative minds onstage for an evening of lively dialogue and debate. Local filmmakers are invited to screen their short films at the beloved Open Projector Night, where the audience is encouraged to offer candid (and occasionally ruthless) feedback. There’s plenty for families to enjoy here, too. The Hammer Kids series emphasizes imagination and creativity. Programs with whimsical names like “Dr. Scribb’s Fantastical Card Combinatorium” and “How to Form an Air Band” teach kids to express themselves (and, incidentally, become better air-guitar players). It’s all part of the Hammer’s mission to bring the artistic, intellectual, and cultural margins of society into the light.
