Adventure Autumn roa Pilot House restaurant overlooking Casco Bay signature par-3 cove hole — scene of my earliest golf memory. And the old course’s last three holes are now the Lake Course, a boon for beginners at $12 per day for unlimited play. There’s still croquet on the central lawn. And hand-cranked ice cream. And candlepin bowling — now modernized with automatic pin setting. Also seemingly unchanged is the Lobster Bake and Other Diversions John Grossmann’s work has appeared in Audubon, Esquire, Gourmet, National Geographic Traveler, The New York Times Magazine, Outside, Saveur, Smithsonian, and Sports Illustrated. 46 JUNE 2013 usairwaysmag.com Croquet on the lawn The Details sebasco harbor resort is about an hour’s drive north of portland on a classic, rocky peninsula jutting into Casco bay. rooms vary in size and price from smaller Main Lodge and Lighthouse accommodations to more luxurious suites in the new spa building. two and threebedroom cottages are also available, while even larger cottages are perfect for family vacations and multi-generation reunions. Nightly summer room prices start at $119 and go as high as $419 in the spa and $1,690 for a 10-bedroom, 10-bathroom cottage. After playing tennis and canoeing on the lake and ocean kayaking, seasoned Sebasco veterans vary their stays by hiking local trails and beachcombing on the expansive, sandy shore (yes, sandy) at Popham Beach State Park. Either coming or going, consider a stop in nearby Freeport, an outlet shopper’s mecca, and home to the ever-expanding L.L. Bean flagship store. lighthouse, with its ten guest rooms. Sebasco offers more spacious stays in its cottages and fancier accommodations in newer buildings, but I longed for nights out in the lighthouse. Drifting off to sleep, the tang of the ocean air salves my wounded pride at carding a bogey on the cove hole this morning. After the morning fog lifts, the 360degree view from the fourth-floor observation room dispels my earlier doubts about a return visit. There’s a panoramic view of Casco Bay, and on the resort grounds, moving portraits of joyful families. One, I learn, is celebrating a 50th wedding anniversary. Another is headed by 60-year-old Meg Slocum, who first came to Sebasco as a two-year-old and has returned every summer since, but one. She’s brought her husband, three children, three grandsons, and an undying love of this piece of the Maine coast. “Sebasco,” she says, “occupies a huge space in our hearts.” And for me, Harry Potter–like, an old photo has come to life. http://www.sebasco.com http://www.usairwaysmag.com
