I’ll never forget the first time I heard it. It was late at night in the dead of winter, and I’d just returned home from a stay in Boston. Maddi was already deep in dreamland, and I went in to kiss her good night. But as I tiptoed into her room, the gentle sounds of water lapping onto a shore stopped me in my tracks. I was instantly transported to another time, another place. Specifically, I found myself at a very special lake house we’ve come to call our home away from home for a week or two every summer, tucked away amid the stately pines and rugged hardwoods of western Maine. That special sound combined with the angelic sight of my sleeping daughter brought tears to my eyes. That’s what lakes can do. We all need an escape from today’s overly scheduled, overly demanding world, full of elec- tronic gadgets designed to make our lives less complicated (often with the opposite effect). When I need a respite, I crank up the family wagon and point it toward one of a handful of special lakes in my adopted home of New England. “Being near a lake, or any open body of water, has a calming effect,” says my wife, Lauri, a Midwestern gal raised in eastern Kansas. “And there’s always something for everyone.” There are many reasons why lakes possess such a magnetic pull. They are places where time, if only for a day or a weekend, can stand still. Younger kids may not recognize that ephemeral quality. But grown-ups can, perhaps because we understand just how rare those moments are. I’ve always been drawn to the water, an inclination passed down from my parents.
