US Airways - June 2013 - (Page 65)
We have opportunities to see the world. And I
believe that I probably have the best job in the
airline. Every time I answer my phone, it’s something different. That’s probably the part I like best.
I like the thrill of never knowing what I’m going to
have to deal with.
Did family have an influence in getting
involved in the airline industry?
Brian jr.: When I was graduating from high
school, I had no college plans because I knew I
wasn’t college material. When I was asked to write
down what I was going to do after high school, I
wrote that I’m going to work for the airlines. But
right after graduation, I got a full-time job at Westinghouse. My dad called and told me the airline
was hiring like crazy for part-time positions. I
didn’t want to give up my full-time job, but I was
laid off six months later. So I called Dad asking if
there was anything still open. The only thing he
said was that he’d try to get me an interview, but
from that point on it was all on me. And he said,
“Don’t screw up the family name.”
How have you learned from each other?
Brian jr.: I learned the ethic of hard work paying
ing for US Airways in 1982 and currently serves
as airline operations manager at the Operations
Control Center in Pittsburgh.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Brian Sr.: I love my job — otherwise I wouldn’t be
putting in fifty-five years. I’ve proved to myself that
I can still do it. It’s a job that’s been good to my
family and even the team that I work with. They’re
fantastic. I’ve been working with some of them for
about twenty-two years.
Brian jr.: I’ve actually been bugging him to retire
since he turned fifty-five. I kept asking, “Dad,
when are you going to retire and enjoy life?” I quit
bugging him because I realized he is enjoying life.
Brian Sr.: I’ve always said I’d retire after fifty-five
years, and I said it again this year. He’s going to kill
me, but I just want to see what’s going to happen
with this company. So I may go another year,
maybe two.
Brian jr.: I’ve made a good living for my family.
off. When I got hired and he told me not to screw
up the family name, I took that to heart.
Brian Sr.: Sure, I got him in here and did what I
had to, but he amazes me with what he does. It’s
mainly the things that I hear from people who
have worked with him and have the utmost respect
for him. I’m really proud.
What’s one thing you’d like to tell people
about the airline?
Brian Sr.: I think it’s the safest way to travel.
You’ve got intelligent people like Brian who care
about the safety of those on board.
Brian jr.: Every airline employee wants the passengers to know that somebody is watching them
24∕7, from start to finish, throughout their flight
experience. From the time they call reservations to
the time they get to their final destination, somebody in the airline is watching out for them.
Can you offer some advice for those looking to
get into the airline industry?
Brian Sr.: Just work hard and enjoy it.
Brian jr.: The aviation industry is a great place to
work. It has great opportunities.
Brian Sr.: Absolutely. There are always opportuni-
ties. They’re not going to come to you, so push
yourself to go after them.
