Clockwise: Very Special Arts Festival, Public Practice, Active Arts at The Music Center’s Dance Downtown event Backstage Pass something going on at The Music Center. In addition to performances by its resident companies, numerous festivals, special events, and community programs invite engagement with the arts. Active Arts at The Music Center allows participants from diverse communities across Southern California to create art and performance themselves by joining in a variety of dance, song, music, and storytelling programs. World City at The Music Center is a free, live performance and visual arts workshop series that celebrates cultures from around the globe. The Music Center also programs community events and an array of performances that take place in Grand Park, LA’s new “town green” that stretches verdantly from The Music Center to City Hall. Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center, one of the leading dance presenters in the U.S., is on stage this summer with performances in June with Hubbard + LINES, a collaboration between Chicago’s Hubbard Street Dance and visionary Alonzo King LINES Ballet, based in San Francisco. And in July, the center welcomes the acclaimed American Ballet Theatre. During the school year, a variety of educational and community outreach programs extend The Music Center’s influence beyond its campus. Spotlight is a free performing and visual arts scholarship training program for local high school teens that helps develop self-esteem as well as artistic and performance skills. Music Center on Tour offers an array of professional musicians, dancers, and other performing artists to schools, exposing children and teens to virtuosic performance up close and personal. It’s a theme that runs through all of The Music Center’s offerings — whether you see a performance by LA Phil or participate in a drum circle through Active Arts, each performance or event seeks to make art accessible to everyone.
