Walt Disney Concert Hall Visiting an Architectural Wonder You can’t miss Walt Disney Concert Hall. Its gleaming curves catch the eye from any approach, inviting passersby to explore what lies behind those petal-like layers of stainless steel. For the visitor, Walt Disney Concert Hall offers a lesson in the architecture of Frank Gehry, who based the design on organic forms such as flowers and trees. Walt Disney Concert Hall organ The public spaces include soaring halls with roofs supported by tree-like columns, and more intimate spaces such as the cafe and gift shop. Celebrity chef Joachim Splichal’s renowned Patina Restaurant, serving modern California and French cuisine, has its own entrance adjacent to the gift shop. Inside the hall, you’ll find the impressive 6,134-pipe organ, also designed by Frank Gehry along with Manuel Rosales. To the west of the building, Gehry designed a serene garden featuring a fountain in the shape of a giant rose. The flower is a tribute to Lillian Disney, who made the initial $50 million gift to fund the concert hall, and was a dedicated gardener. Free, self-guided audio tours of the complex are offered most days year-round between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Docent-led tours (also free) are offered on select days. For a tour schedule, or to take a virtual online tour, visit laphil.com/visit/tours. Note that to see the actual concert hall interior, visitors must attend a performance. The hall is not open to tours due to its near-constant use as a rehearsal and performance space. 80 June 2013 usairwaysmag.com distinctive structure an enduring symbol of Los Angeles. The concert hall’s exceptional acoustics have allowed performances by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, and visiting orchestras and artists to reach new musical heights. “When Walt Disney Concert Hall opened, it gave us an opportunity to reimagine what the LA Phil could be,” says Deborah Borda, president and chief executive officer. “The coming season is a celebration of both the opening of the hall ten years ago and what the LA Phil has become since that time — an international symbol of the city’s creative spirit and a welcoming, musical home.” The tenth anniversary celebration kicks off with a series of three free concerts by the LA Phil in community venues across Los Angeles. Those events are followed by another free concert, the first ever side-by-side performance at Walt Disney Concert Hall by the LA Phil and Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA), part of a program that provides intensive musical training and free instruments for more than 500 young people in underserved neighborhoods. “The tenth anniversary of Walt Disney Concert Hall is a wonderful reason to celebrate,” says music director Gustavo Dudamel. “Frank Gehry built this world-renowned masterpiece as a living room for the people, and we get to share it with audiences through our music-making.” Both Dudamel and conductor laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen, who led the LA Phil from 1992 to 2009, take the podium this fall to commemorate the concert hall’s decade. Dudamel and cellist Yo-Yo Ma share the stage on opening night, while Salonen will conduct the world premiere of Frank Zappa’s 200 Motels on October 23, the actual anniversary of the hall’s opening. The Zappa piece is one of a record number of premieres and commissions by the LA Phil during the 2013/14 season, underscoring the orchestra’s commitment to contemporary music. In April 2014, creative chair John Adams curates a reprise of the acclaimed Minimalist Jukebox festival, which first took place in 2006. At that time, the LA Phil was the first major orchestra to showcase minimalism, the hypnotic American musical style born in the 1960s. Minimalist Jukebox highlights legendary works by the movement’s major stars, such as Terry Riley, Philip Glass, Louis Andriessen, Steve Reich, and Adams, as well as ground- http://www.laphil.com/visit/tours http://www.usairwaysmag.com
