breaking pieces composed by a new generation of innovators. While championing the new, the LA Phil treasures the cornerstones of classical music. “As a young boy, I discovered Tchaikovsky through great recordings, and he has had a very special place in my heart ever since,” says Dudamel, who will preside over a festival celebrating the complete symphonies of the Russian composer beginning in February. TchaikovskyFest combines the musical forces of the LA Phil musicians and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, for which Dudamel also serves as music director. The exploration of Tchaikovsky includes performances of the symphonies and tone poems, as well as community and educational events with YOLA, and culminates in a joint performance by the LA Phil and the Bolívar orchestra on March 2, 2014. The season also brings the second installment of pianist Leif Ove Andsnes’s investigation of the Beethoven piano concertos, while András Schiff will complete his two-year exploration of Bach’s solo keyboard music, and Emanuel Ax will collaborate with Yo-Yo Ma and Anne Sofie von Otter in recitals featuring Brahms. In May 2014, the LA Phil presents the final production in its ambitious three-year project highlighting the extraordinary operas Mozart composed with librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte. In prior years, the company produced Don Giovanni and The Marriage of Figaro, with leading architects creating the set design and major fashion designers making the costumes. This coming season’s fully staged production of Così fan tutte, conducted by Dudamel, features installation design by architect Dame Zaha Hadid and costumes by visionary designer Hussein Chalayan. Rounding out the 2013/14 season are world music, popular song, and jazz programs, the latter overseen by the LA Phil’s creative chair for jazz, the legendary Herbie Hancock, who joins his two predecessors for a once-in-a-lifetime anniversary celebration in February.
