sing the title role in this Jules Massenet story of the struggle between spirituality and physical passion in Byzantine-era Egypt. In October, LA Opera presents a revival of the groundbreaking 1976 collaboration between composer Philip Glass and director Robert Wilson, Einstein on the Beach, featuring the Philip Glass Ensemble, the Lucinda Childs Dance Company, and violinist Jennifer Koh. Los Angeles is the final North American stop of the production’s international tour, praised by critics as “a mystical experience.” The season continues with Shakespeare’s beloved rogue, Sir John Falstaff, brought to hilarious life in Verdi’s Falstaff, the Italian composer’s last opera, presented this year as part of the worldwide commemoration of Verdi’s 200th birthday. Conducted by music director James Conlon, the production features Italian baritone Roberto Frontali in the title role. In November, the opera presents Mozart’s The Magic Flute, starring tenor Lawrence Brownlee and soprano Janai Brugger, and in March, a new production of Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, with Russian coloratura soprano Albina Shagimuratova in the title role. The opera world celebrates the 100th birthday of British composer Benjamin Britten this year, and LA Opera is the catalyst for Britten 100/LA: A Centenary Celebration, a year-long collaboration with numerous local cultural organizations and artists in performances, educational programs, and conferences throughout Los Angeles County. The festivities culminate in LA Opera’s February production of Billy Budd, one of Britten’s most celebrated works. Extending the company’s reach, LA Opera brings together hundreds of singers and musicians of all ages — both amateur and professional — for family friendly performances at downtown’s Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels every spring. The community opera for families is part of the opera’s Off Grand initiative to bring performances to a wider, more diverse audience, and expose younger people to the magic of the art form. Bravo!
