“Its whole focus is on the individual creativity of the students. That means identifying what’s unique in the students’ points of view in their approach to artmaking and helping to build up the strengths of those points of view.” CalArts’ interdisciplinary approach means that students regularly collaborate with colleagues across different art forms. Set designers often work in producing theater, dance, and music. Composers are as likely to invent new instruments as they are to create interactive gallery art. It’s that spirit of collaboration across disciplines that nurtured alumni such as Brad Bird, the writer, animator, producer, occasional voice actor, and Academy Award winner behind the hit movies The Incredibles and Ratatouille. CalArts is no stranger to accolades. New York’s Museum of Modern Art honored the school with a retrospective film screening series appropriately titled Tomorrowland. Graduates of CalArts’ animation program have generated a combined $27 billion in worldwide box-office grosses since 1985. U.S. News & World Report included the school in its “Top Ten” rankings of fine arts, graphic design, multimedia and visual communications, sculpture, and photography programs. And Newsweek/The Daily Beast ranked CalArts as the nation’s No. 1 college for students in the arts. Ultimately, the school’s greatest strength and inspiration, according to Lavine, is its stunningly talented students — the so-called “CalArtians.” “This is a world that can get pretty discouraging,” says Lavine. “So many kids are struggling so hard and pursuing careers they don’t want. And I don’t fault them; it’s a rough world. But I look at our kids, fully aware they have to find ways to support and sustain themselves, and wanting to create a genuine contribution, and they go out and do it.” At CalArts, there’s always a new generation of imagineers ready to change the world.
