three other divisions. The Colburn School of Performing Arts, founded in 1950, offers classes in music, drama, voice, and early childhood arts education, all with an emphasis on performance. Highly gifted youngsters can also receive conservatory-level instruction in the Young Artists Academy. The Trudl Zipper Dance Institute offers instruction in dance and ballet to students of all ages, whether they’re interested in a professional dance career or simply wish to improve their techniques. The Adult Studies Division, meanwhile, enables adults to continue their musical studies with leading musicians on the Colburn faculty. Courses range from music appreciation and theory to performance. Among the four divisions, some 1,700 students attend classes at the Colburn each year. The state-of-the-art campus, which includes classrooms, practice rooms, rehearsal and performance space, dormitories, and a cafe, is located across the street from Walt Disney Concert Hall in what’s often called “the heart of art” in downtown LA. Colburn’s emphasis on performance is no empty promise; each academic year the school presents its students, faculty, and guest artists in more than 300 performances, many of which are free and open to the public. The Colburn Orchestra, composed of conservatory students, has won praise for its series of concerts at the school’s Zipper Hall, at Ambassador Auditorium in Pasadena, and other performance spaces in and around Los Angeles. Recently, acclaimed LA Phil music director Gustavo Dudamel led the Colburn Orchestra in a performance at Disney Hall. It was an extraordinary opportunity for the young musicians to play with Dudamel, but the audience members may have felt more fortunate. If you missed it, don’t worry — the students return to Disney Hall in November with James Conlon.
