To Your Health Supporting Families DEVEREUX HAS CHANGED NOT JUST ANNIE'S LIFE, BUT THE LIVES OF EVERYONE IN OUR FAMILY. - Amy Kelly PHOTOS COURTESY OF DEVEREUX PENNSYLVANIA The focus on helping the entire family can be seen in the story of Devereux student Annie Kelly (above right), who was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at age two. Annie was nonverbal and faced a number of medical challenges in addition to her autism diagnosis. "My world changed instantly when we received Annie's diagnosis," says her mother, Amy. "Autism is an extremely frustrating disorder. As a single mom with three children, I felt overwhelmed by the unknown: Would my daughter ever be able to communicate with me and the world around her? How would her diagnosis affect my other children? What would her life be like as an adult?" Today, 12-year-old Annie is thriving as a student at Devereux CARES (Childhood Autism Research and Education Services) and has made tremendous gains with the support of caring staff from Devereux Pennsylvania. She is able to communicate with her family and her educational community, and she continues to build her social and life skills. "If Annie wasn't at Devereux, I don't know where we would be today. Devereux has changed not just Annie's life, but the lives of everyone in our family," Amy says. As an innovative leader in behavioral healthcare, Devereux also fulfills its charitable mission through prevention and public education programs that support the social and emotional health of all people. Through a host of resilience-building and positive behavioral support initiatives in public schools nationwide, Devereux is focused on helping communities understand the importance of supporting the social and emotional development of children and reinforcing those skills throughout life.
