An outdoor adventure experience - perhaps sailing the Chesapeake Bay or a ropes obstacle course - to test students' inner strength is part of the equation as is community service, study abroad, and attending lectures from the likes of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia; Larry Pope, CEO of Smithﬁeld Foods; or Bill and Kathy Magee, founders of Operation Smile. A minor in leadership studies is open to all. Contributing to the enrichment of the CNU experience are stunning additions to its 260-acre campus, such as the Ferguson Center for the Arts. Designed by I.M. Pei's ﬁrm, this architectural jewel echoes CNU's Jeffersonian aesthetic and adds a modern twist. Its facilities - a 1,700-seat concert hall (whose acoustics are so good that singer Andrea Bocelli dispensed with a microphone), a 500-seat theater, and multiple recital and rehearsal rooms - have enhanced the university's performing arts departments and attracted more than 1.5 million people. Little wonder, then, that U.S. News & World Report named CNU among the top "up-and-coming schools in the South," one where prospective students from across Virginia and beyond are clamoring to apply. But Trible prefers to keep enrollment at 5,000. "We're not the least bit interested in getting bigger, just better," he says. And the lucky ones who do join the ranks of the Captains, CNU's aptly named mascot, will soon ﬁnd themselves spirited and engaged. "This is not a place for spectators," says Trible, "Our students look you in the eye. They speak. They smile, acknowledging the humanity of anyone who crosses their path. That's the most important lesson."
