Wine & Dine explore Taste, Savor, Enjoy Quality Whites for Under $20 There's a world of choices. By Nick Passmore ★ Now that white wine has become a staple cocktail order, it's being produced by the tanker-full, all over the world, with millions of gallons being consumed each year. The problem with this popularity, this ubiquity, is that whether it's creamy California oak-juice or thin, Italian lemon-water, too much of it is decidedly unimpressive. And that's being polite. It's hard to make good white wine, and it's even harder to make good, inexpensive white wine. But the encouraging news for wine drinkers is that more and more conscientious winemakers are pulling off this conjuring trick. So where to look if you're after an interesting white wine at a modest price? As a general rule, seek out the unfashionable, in terms of geographic origin and varietal, and the new. California's whites have become ridiculously expensive - we're just so used to it we no longer notice. And Burgundy, at least the posh parts, is even more expensive. No, if you are in search of value in white wine you'll be rewarded for scanning wider horizons. The less glamorous parts of France (Alsace, the southwest, Loire Valley), Italy, Spain, Germany, and the Finger Lakes of New York all hold the potential for exciting discovery. The former communist states of Eastern Europe, notably Croatia and Hungary, are making huge strides. In the Southern Hemisphere, South Africa is doing great things while prices are still reasonable, and New Zealand is expanding beyond generic Sauvignon Blanc. Here are 20 affordable whites that won't disappoint.
