young artists in the region." With a ﬂexible, state-of-the-art 250-seat theater, a 3,000-square-foot gallery, and an inviting bar and lounge where artists and audiences meet, REDCAT presents everything from engaging panel discussions and experimental ﬁlm and animation, to provocative visual arts installations and leading contemporary dance and theater from around the world. Its far-reaching roster of artists includes musician Lou Reed, theater artist Andre Gregory, comedian Sandra Bernhard, and visual artists Kara Walker and Barry McGee, as well as New Zealand-based choreographer Lemi Ponifasio and Thai ﬁlmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul, among others. When REDCAT opened downtown in 2003, it brought CalArts's spirit of artistic inquiry into the heart of the city; the legendary CalArts campus is situated in Valencia, just 30 miles north of LA. "A great city needs a worldclass symphony orchestra, a leading opera company, and professional theater," Murphy says, "but it also needs a home for innovative projects that contribute to the evolution of contemporary culture." Nearly every day of the year, the center is abuzz with performances, exhibitions, and screenings, featuring both up-and-coming local artists as well as the most innovative creators of our time. And after the show, as well as throughout the day, REDCAT's Lounge offers ﬁne espresso, select spirits, and assorted snacks. But most importantly, the Lounge is a one-of-a kind hangout where artists and audiences mingle together, continuing the conversation that started onstage or within the gallery walls. "To make a contribution in the arts, you have to be in dialogue with the most important things that are happening in your time," says CalArts president Steven Lavine. And at REDCAT, that dialogue thrives between artist and audience - between city and venue. It's what makes REDCAT such a unique and treasured piece of Los Angeles's urban fabric.
