Through its collection, programs, publications, online resources, and rotating exhibits, JANM is a moving tribute to a people and a place, built to inspire and transform lives. At the heart of JANM is the ﬁrst-person voices from the Issei (ﬁrst-generation) and Nisei (second-generation) immigrant experience - a story of sacriﬁce, hard work, heartbreak, and survival. The forced removal of hundreds of thousands of Americans of Japanese ancestry into internment camps during World War II is a key reminder to all of the vital role that civil rights and social justice play in a free society. The ﬂagship permanent exhibit, Common Ground: The Heart of Community, features hundreds of photographs, documents, and objects that help chronicle 130 years of Japanese American history. JANM offers visitors a unique opportunity to discover and explore their own cultural heritage and identity. Through August 25, JANM presents Visible & Invisible, about the history of Japanese Americans of mixed ethnic heritage. Portraiture Now, through September 22, considers the diversity of contemporary Asian Americans with the groundbreaking work of seven visual artists. JANM also presents a dynamic slate of programs all year including its Target Free Family Saturdays with performances, workshops, and craft activities. July 4-7, the museum will hold its fourth national conference in Seattle: Speaking Up! Democracy, Justice, Dignity.
