Today, the Getty Center's buildings, designed by Richard Meier and clad in timeless travertine, look as fresh as they did on opening day in 1997. The exquisite plantings of Robert Irwin's Central Garden have matured into their full glory. And there's a wealth to see and do in addition to traditional museum-going. The Getty Center hosts an ambitious program of concerts, from classical to contemporary music, designed to add a tuneful dimension to visitors' experience of the museum. Saturdays Off the 405 is a summer series of free, open-air musical events showcasing emerging bands and DJs. In the fall, listen to classical music with the Gordon Getty Concert series. Family friendly activities cater to the little ones, and for the adults, a year-round series of film screenings, lectures, and workshops highlight the themes of special exhibitions at the Getty. The J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa, meanwhile, offers a different experience: a getaway, a trip back in time. Tucked into a canyon overlooking the Malibu hills and the Pacific Ocean, the Villa is a replica of a firstcentury A.D. Roman country home, the Villa dei Papiri, complete with manicured gardens and a serene reflecting pool framed by a columned peristyle. Some highlights from the museum's collection of Greek, Roman, and Etrurian antiquities include the Lansdowne Herakles, a marble statue of Hercules commissioned by the Roman emperor Hadrian; a rare Romano-Egyptian mummy; and a constantly changing series of exhibitions and loans from around the world. It is also home to the UCLA/ Getty Master's Program, the only graduatelevel program in the U.S. that focuses solely on the conservation of archaeological and ethnographic materials. Like the Getty Center, the Villa offers an extensive program to enrich the museum experience, including lectures, workshops, performances, and family activities. A free, timed ticket is required to visit the Villa.
