This web of creative energy is spun largely
through the efforts of the city's Department of
Cultural Affairs (DCA). Dating to 1925, when
the Municipal Arts Department began to deliver arts programs across LA, today DCA generates and supports high-quality arts and cultural experiences for the city's four million
residents and 40 million annual visitors. The
department ensures extensive access to diverse
and enriching cultural activities through grantmaking, marketing, public art, community arts
programming, and by building partnerships
with artists and arts and cultural organizations.
DCA's facilities range from small neighborhood art centers to large galleries and cultural
centers. The organization provides conservation services, educational programs, and tours
at two national historic landmarks: Barnsdall
Park's Hollyhock House (Frank Lloyd Wright's
first Los Angeles project, finished in 1921), and
the iconic Watts Towers, built by Simon Rodia
from broken glass, shells, pottery, tile, and other
reclaimed materials.
