Creative Wellspring T he arts and culture are alive in every neighborhood across the vast city of Los Angeles: drummers beat, budding artists paint, and dancers leap. 94 discoverlosangeles.com By Cheryl CraBtree This web of creative energy is spun largely through the efforts of the city's Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA). Dating to 1925, when the Municipal Arts Department began to deliver arts programs across LA, today DCA generates and supports high-quality arts and cultural experiences for the city's four million residents and 40 million annual visitors. The department ensures extensive access to diverse and enriching cultural activities through grantmaking, marketing, public art, community arts programming, and by building partnerships with artists and arts and cultural organizations. DCA's facilities range from small neighborhood art centers to large galleries and cultural centers. The organization provides conservation services, educational programs, and tours at two national historic landmarks: Barnsdall Park's Hollyhock House (Frank Lloyd Wright's first Los Angeles project, finished in 1921), and the iconic Watts Towers, built by Simon Rodia from broken glass, shells, pottery, tile, and other reclaimed materials. all photos courtesy of the city of los angeles department of cultural affairs (dca); this page, bottom: by robert berger photography; facing page, hollyhock house and watts towers by robert berger photography LA's Department of Cultural Affairs is a major supporter of the arts community. http://www.discoverlosangeles.com
