Athletes in Action
(Off the Court)
The Atlantic 10’s Student-Athlete Advisory
Committee (SAAC) continues to raise awareness of important societal issues and highlight core values through its “friendly” video
competition. This competition initiative began
in 2010–11 with a theme of creating videos
that promote an NCAA or institutional value
or an ideal that student-athletes are especially
proud of or passionate about.
For the 2011–12 competition — the second year
of the initiative — the SAAC unanimously voted for an anti-bullying campaign as the theme
of the contest. The winner was determined by
two equally weighted components: the online
fan vote and voting conducted by each institution’s SAAC organization. Eleven A-10 schools
submitted videos for consideration.
The anti-bullying competition generated
nearly 16,000 online votes in addition to the
on-campus polling. Temple won with its “Owls
Give a Hoot” video, followed by
La Salle and Richmond.
“I’m very proud of what the student-athletes
in the SAAC have done both in the creativity
of their videos and in their efforts to address
an incredibly important topic in our society
today,” says A-10 Commissioner Bernadette
V. McGlade. “Each institution should be commended for helping to bring to light the issue
of bullying in our society.”
