he Northeast’s first Catholic institution
of higher learning, Fordham University
seamlessly combines the Jesuit traditions
of rigorous scholarship and topflight athletics.
Founded in 1841, Fordham has expanded to
ten schools on three campuses, offering students
all the excitement of its host city, New York. The
roughly 15,200 students from around the world
choose from more than 50 majors in liberal arts,
sciences, and business, and complete a rich core
curriculum that spans literature, history, science,
theology, philosophy, and the arts.
Fordham’s mission is to foster “lifelong habits
of careful observation, critical thinking, creativity, moral reflection and articulate expression.”
With an exceptional 14:1 student/teacher ratio,
the school boasts a graduation rate of 78 percent,
20 percent above the national average.
Embodying the motto “Proud to be a Ram,”
the athletic program’s remarkable history dates
to the first collegiate nine-on-nine baseball
game against St. Francis Xavier College in 1859.
Fordham holds the all-time NCAA record for
baseball wins with 4,298. In 1971, a young Richard “Digger” Phelps coached the basketball
team to a No. 9 national ranking. Home court is
historic Rose Hill Gym, named a “Cathedral of
College Basketball” by ESPN The Magazine
and one of the ten great college arenas by USA
Today. Fordham football, which competes in the
Patriot League, is fabled for its “Seven Blocks of
Granite” offensive line of the mid-1930s featuring future NFL legend Vince Lombardi.
Today, the Rams have 22 Division I men’s
and women’s varsity teams, plus a number of
club squads. The maroon-and-white compete
in the Atlantic 10 Conference in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and
outdoor track, and volleyball.
