In the heart of Scottsdale, SOL Mexican
Cocina transports diners to Baja. That unmistakable, easygoing vibe is everywhere, from the
flavorful food and handcrafted margaritas, to the
decor and ambience.
SOL opened its first location in Newport Beach,
California, overlooking Balboa Marina. Executive
chef Deborah Schneider — a James Beard Award
nominee, author of five Mexican cookbooks, and
Baja expert — oversees both locations.
Schneider’s expertise in authentic Mexican
cooking is apparent in SOL’s menu. It’s a fresh,
simple approach to food: Premium meats are grilled
or slow simmered, fish is fresh and sustainability
caught, and all items are made from scratch daily,
using high-quality ingredients.
What to order? Menu items
include coastal Mexican fare
such as beer-battered shrimp
tacos, carne asada street tacos,
and the famed El Jefe taco.
Unique mariscos include spicy
Mexican yellowtail ceviche
with tropical fruit and vegetable
chips, and SOL’s signature
guacamole is made with goat
cheese, mango, and a dash of

you. Schneider calls this “stealth health,” referencing her use of colorful, fresh, and simple ingredients.
SOL’s unique cocktails are made with the same
passion. Margaritas are mixed with fresh-squeezed
fruit juices, agave nectar, and one of 60 artisanal
tequilas. Try the Cucumber-Jalapeno Margarita for
a spicy kick; the Bulldog is a beer margarita, served
in an oversize glass with an overturned Coronita.
You’ll never look at margaritas the same!
So grab your cocktail, head to the patio, and
cozy up to the indoor/outdoor bar. There’s live
music on Tuesdays and Sundays, a daily happy hour
and reverse happy hour, weekend brunch, and Taco
Tuesday nights, plus the best people-watching
around. But are you in Scottsdale or Baja? You may
not know — and you probably won’t care.
