A City to Love
#

COVER PHOTO BY BOB KRIST FOR GPTMC

Being a native of Philadelphia,
I was engrossed in this month’s
cover feature. I haven’t lived there for a
couple of decades, but I return often to
see family and friends.
As the stories for our coverage of
the city rolled in, I was struck by how
much I knew and how much was new.
Independence Hall, the historic area,
the Museum of Art, the Franklin Institute, and other venerable landmarks all
feel like a part of me. While Philadelphia is a historic treasure and still
retains its urbane elegance rooted in
old-world sensibilities, it’s also a gritty,
working-class town where cheesesteaks
and hoagies are devoured by the hour
and sports fans (Fly, Iggles, Fly!) flock
to see their hometown heroes.
And it’s this dichotomy that makes

The Story Behind
the Stories

Philadelphia ever fascinating. Many of
you no longer live in the towns where
you were born, but like me, I’m sure
you carry that place inside you. I’ve
lived longer in the South than I did
in the Philadelphia area, but I’m still
loyal to the Eagles, Phillies, and the
teams of Penn, Villanova, and Temple.
I still seek out Tastykakes (now in
North Carolina!), and when I drive
north, I stop for gas and a sandwich
at Wawa.
So wherever you’re from, I encourage you to visit Philly. There’s much to
see and much to love.
On a final note, next month’s issue
will feature a sneak peek of singer (and
guitarist extraordinaire) Brad Paisley’s
new album, Wheelhouse, due for release on April 9.
