Winter Park We want Luma to be exciting and comfortable, whether you're wearing jeans or a suit. - Chef Brandon McGlamery GETTING THERE US Airways offers direct daily ﬂights to Orlando from Charlotte, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Washington, DC. # Orlando 48 MARCH 2014 Park Avenue is lined with clothing boutiques, art galleries, sidewalk cafes, and excellent restaurants, and ﬂanked by enormous live oaks draped in moss. If you need caffeine to get your stroll on, local favorite Palmano's is known for its fresh brew, espresso, and breakfast. Down the street is another local original, Barnie's CoffeeKitchen, a java lover's haven with gourmet munchies. In the park at the center of Park Avenue, the city presents movies. Don't be surprised if you feel like you've gone back to a gentler time in an American storybook era. You'll often hear train whistles close-by, and on the far side of the park is a passenger station with freight trains regularly rumbling through. Restaurants catering to a variety of tastes and price points decorate Park Avenue. The Briar Patch is a beloved breakfast and lunch hotspot usairwaysmag.com with sinfully good desserts. 310 Park South offers a reasonably priced, extensive menu with a full bar and a choice of street-side indoor seating or alfresco dining. Across the street, the elegant restaurant at the Park Plaza Hotel (circa 1922) takes advantage of the perennial sunshine and offers generous sidewalk seating. A few blocks off Park Avenue, there's the Hannibal Square historic neighborhood with standard-bearer Dexter's (check out their award-winning Sunday brunch) and a host of new venues. For ﬁne dining on Park Avenue, it's hard to beat Luma, the creation of chef Brandon McGlamery, a 2013 James Beard award ﬁnalist. The atmosphere at Luma is upscale-chic but fun. "We want Luma to be exciting and comfortable, whether you're wearing jeans or a suit," McGlamery says. Luma excels at friendly sophistication. To that end, Luma offers small and large plates and wines by the glass and half glass. The waitstaff is highly trained at pairing Florida-inﬂuenced dishes with world-class vino. The menu is seasonal and can change weekly, depending on local produce and fresh catches. The pastas are homemade, and there's usually a version of rigatoni bolognese that features McGlamery's prized ragu. Knock back craft cocktails, or order a bottle of select wine - or best of all, allow your waiter to "drive the bus," as Lars, one of Luma's superb waiters, puts it. Farther down the avenue, McGlamery operates Prato, a rustic Italian eatery with a hip vibe, which features house-made pastas, wood-oven pizzas, and year-round sidewalk dining. Order the Widowmaker pizza - caciocavallo cheese, Romesco sauce, and fennel sausage topped with a farm egg. Pair the order with a chilled Lambrusco. Those who like a hopping bar scene will ﬁnd just that at Prato and Luma. Just off of Park Avenue, McGlamery's friends, James and Julie Petrakis, have been getting rave reviews for The Ravenous Pig and Cask & Larder. Like McGlamery, the Petrakises are central Florida natives committed to local culture and foodways. Like Luma, The Ravenous Pig offers a seasonal menu that changes weekly, but you can count on a delectable pork dish and a bold take on fresh ﬁsh. One of the restaurant's staples is an over-the-top creamy and zesty shrimp and grits. Cask & Larder is tagged by the Petrakises as a "Southern Public House."
