| UNIVERSITY # SPOTLIGHT | Courting Success The University of Dayton is at the center of college basketball. By Ivy Lamb I f college basketball has a home, it's Dayton, Ohio. The University of Dayton (UD) has hosted games of the Division I Men's Basketball Championship for 13 straight years, and no place captures the excitement of March Madness quite like UD. The university started hosting NCAA men's tournament games in 1970. Since then, University of Dayton Arena has welcomed more Division I basketball tournament games than any other venue (101 to be exact). UD is set to host the First Four until at least 2015 and has extended the offer for the next ten years. How has Dayton become synonymous with the 62 MARCH 2014 usairwaysmag.com kickoff of March Madness? UD Vice President and Director of Athletics Tim Wabler believes that it's the school's commitment to making it a great experience for everyone involved - teams, coaches, and the audience. "Teams are met with a red carpet welcome at the airport and a band playing the visiting school's ﬁght song," Wabler says. "Last year, we also sold out the ﬁrst, second, and third rounds - ten games in six days. Our stands are always ﬁlled. We give it that championship feeling." While the tip-off of the NCAA Tournament is a highlight for Dayton, the community's enthusiasm for college basketball extends well beyond it.
