SLU's Jim Crews was named 2013 NABC National Coach of the Year. Women's Basketball in the Atlantic 10 Duquesne's Wumi Agunbiade shoots against 2013 A-10 Champion Saint Joseph's. Historically, the A-10 has always had great coaches. And they've had great stability with the coaches. -Andy Katz, ESPN college basketball analyst "Our success in men's basketball the last three seasons is directly attributed to those objectives. Clearly, A-10 member institutions are committed to building their programs the right way. As a result - and as we have witnessed first-hand at Saint Louis - you will find student-athletes becoming champions not only in their sports arenas, but in the classroom and community as well. The A-10 is clearly positioned as one of the premier basketball conferences in the country." Playing to Win The A-10 style of play is equal parts skill, tenacity, cerebral tactics, and teamwork. It's embodied in Martelli's pillars for teamwork: Compete, share, take your shot when it comes, and know your strengths and weaknesses. "We're defined by a heavy work ethic," says McGlade, now in her sixth year as A-10 commissioner. "We're not really fancy, but we get the job done, with solid athletes who are fundamentally ➺ T he Atlantic 10 has established a strong tradition in women's basketball. In the last 10 years, A-10 women's basketball has made 26 NCAA Tournament appearances, and the league has had at least seven teams advance to postseason play in each of the last five years, with 38 total postseason invitations during that time. This season, the A-10 has had seven teams ranked in the top 100 of the Rating Percentage Index (RPI). Last March the 2013 A-10 Championship, won by Saint Joseph's, was the first women's basketball championship played at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, before a record crowd of 4,436. "We have such a strong tradition of women's basketball in the Atlantic 10, from multiple NCAA bids every year to wins over marquee programs, and we continue to make strides in our efforts to grow the game in the A-10," says Greg Amodio, Duquesne University's director of athletics. Because of the strength of A-10 women's basketball, the conference had the opportunity to move the championship to the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Virginia, beginning this March. It is just the third time in league history the championship is at a neutral site, and it makes the A-10 one of only eight conferences where a neutral-site women's championship is separate from the men's championship. "It's an exciting time for Atlantic 10 women's basketball," says Fordham Coach Stephanie Gaitley. "The level of play and parity among the teams is outstanding. Moving to Richmond for our conference championship is a great sign of the growth and overall success of our league." usairwaysmag.com MARCH 2014 73 http://www.usairwaysmag.com
