CEO Letter embark Thank you for Flying With US In Support of Education ★ With the school year coming to a close, many of you are planning summer travel to see family and friends or to explore new destinations. Here at US Airways, we’re planning for the next school year and how we can support educational initiatives in the communities we serve. We believe that good corporate citizenship contributes to the economic and social well-being of our employees, shareholders, customers, and communities. As part of our corporate-giving and communityrelations efforts, we invest in nonprofit education, arts, and human-services organizations that focus on sustainable change to build healthy, vibrant communities. Although all three of these areas of giving are important, we put a special emphasis on education through the US Airways Education Foundation. The foundation’s mission is to support educational initiatives by providing grants to education groups and by funding college scholarships for a healthy-eating program at the North Penn Valley Boys & Girls Club near Philadelphia is one of many efforts supported by the US airways Education Foundation. children of US Airways employees. Since 1992, the US Airways Education Foundation has awarded nearly $4.9 million in grants and scholarships. Some of our financial support has gone to organizations such as Elevate Phoenix, which empowers teens to develop presentation and teaching skills by mentoring second and third graders. Another group, Charlotte’s Freedom School Partners, provides a six-week summer literacy program that serves 1,600 low-income children. Last year these two organizations, along with 15 others in our hub cities of Charlotte, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Washington, each received $10,000 grants from the Education Foundation to help fund their programs. The foundation expects to award nearly $300,000 in scholarships to children of US Airways employees in 2013. And this fall, US Airways is launching scholarship programs with each of the largest public universities and community colleges in our hub cities to complement our internal program. Students at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Arizona State University, Temple University, Central Piedmont Community College, Maricopa Community College, and Community College of Philadelphia will share in nearly $100,000 in new scholarships funded by the airline. This year’s application for grants from the US Airways Education Foundation is now online. Nonprofit organizations may apply at usairways.com /corporategiving before July 1, 2013. The program is open to nonprofits located within the airline’s four hub cities. Grants are awarded to educational programs that focus on economically disadvantaged or developmentally disabled children, or programs that increase student interest and academic achievement in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
