Done in a style best described as neo-bordello, the couple’s labor of love is a cozy, intimate hideaway with scarlet letter–red walls, ornate crystal chandeliers, a gorgeous coppery pressed-tin ceiling, and several semi-private booths where you can satisfy your cravings for dessert bliss, perhaps with Banana Bazooka, layers of crepes with bananas, caramel, white chocolate ganache, and Heath Bar crunch, or Peanut Butter Perversion, creamydreamy peanut butter mousse on a chocolatecookie-dough crust. But it’s not just the sweets that are the stuff dreams are made of; it’s Key West itself. There’s something about the Southernmost City — the weather, the people, the water, the ambience, the freedom, or maybe all of them — that can smack a twenty-something kid like Norman Van Aken full in the face, and half a lifetime later have him recalling, “It was an absolute release. To me it was nirvana.” It still is.
