Hugo's stories bring art and romance to culturally rich Paris, along with history, politics, and music. Here's where to look. Maison de Victor Hugo (Victor Hugo House) Begin your trip by visiting the house where Hugo lived from 1832 to 1848 with his wife and four children. He wrote some of his major works here, including a large portion of Les Misérables. The museum illustrates Hugo's life through his personal possessions, travel souvenirs, drawings, and interior decoration. Admission is free. You'll learn that Hugo studied law before giving it up to pursue writing in 1818. His first novel, Han d'Islande, was published in 1823, and 1831 saw the publication of The Hunchback of Notre Dame - one of Hugo's most beloved tales. The writer was highly respected in his own time. When Hugo loudly opposed ruler Louis Bonaparte in 1851, people listened - and he spent much of his adult life in exile for his trouble. Hugo lived and wrote in Belgium and in Britain before returning to France in 1871. During his exile, he became a symbol of the French republic. After repeatedly flipping from church to national monument and back, today it retains qualities of both, with painted angels flying among French flags.
