Central Arkansas
L
ittle Rock exudes the
charm of a Southern
Belle, the beauty of
Mother Nature, and the
elegance of a First Lady.
She keeps an eye on tradition from the windows
of her stately antebellum buildings and ornate
Victorian homes, but in her gleaming glass facade
skyscrapers, she is full of vision. Home to poets,
rock stars, authors, actresses, sports legends, generals, and a U.S. President, she somehow manages
to remain delightfully undiscovered, possessing
a depth, beauty, and excitement beyond what
many people expect.
It's these defining characteristics that led
Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine to award
the city the coveted No. 1 spot on its "10 Great
Places to Live" for 2013.
Located in the heart of the state, Little Rock
and North Little Rock share the stage of Central
Arkansas, with the Arkansas River flowing between the two. A 1722 journal entry from JeanBaptiste Bénard de La Harpe's expedition noted
rock outcroppings as navigation landmarks. Thus,
the cities' names are derived from a small rock
formation called La Petite Roche, or "the little
rock," located on the south bank of the river.
Not split, but rather bound together by the
Arkansas River, the two cities connect via arteries
serving pedestrians, cyclists, boaters, trolleys,
trains, and cars. Tourists and locals enjoy the
liveliness found in riverfront parks, museums,
art venues, and the thumping beat of music at
pubs and clubs.
Cultural Cachet
Art, music, and entertainment - Central Arkansas brims with creativity. Start your cultural tour in
North Little Rock's Argenta Arts District. Located
along the Arkansas River Trail, it contains fine art
galleries, studios, a community theater, shops, a
farmer's market, restaurants, and bars. At the
Starving Artist Cafe, you can get a taste of storytelling Southern-style - Tales From the South
radio shows are recorded here in front of live audiences each week. The vibrant nightlife is apparent
at Ristorante Capeo, where crowds dine on authentic Italian cuisine, and at the professional
comedy club, The Joint, where laughter can be
heard down the street.
In Little Rock, the revitalized downtown
features mixed-use high-rise buildings. Nearby,
the Esse Purse Museum & Store celebrates what
makes her "her" with a collection of purses from
the 1900s to the present. And at the River Market,
you'll find a high-energy area surging with restaurants, galleries, bars, museums, hotels, live music
venues, and an open-air seasonal farmer's market.
Another downtown gem is the William J.
Clinton Presidential Center and Park. Situated
on 30 acres, the center includes the Presidential
Library and Museum, featuring the only full-size
replica of the Oval Office. This $160 million,
20,000-square-foot structure showcases documents, photographs, videos, exhibits, and alcoves
about life in the White House.
The nearby Rock Island Railroad Bridge has
been transformed into the pedestrian Clinton
Tourists and locals enjoy the
liveliness found in riverfront
parks, museums, art venues,
and at pubs and clubs.
