technology, math, and engineering. From boutiques to upscale malls, "shoppertunities" abound. Check out downtown and the River Market for an eclectic collection of gift shops, boutiques, and art galleries. Meanwhile, the openair Promenade at Chenal features top brands such as Anthropologie, lululemon, and J.Crew. Afterward, catch a game at Dickey-Stephens Park, home to the AA minor league Arkansas Travelers, an Anaheim Angels farm team. Or score a hot ticket for stars such as Bruno Mars and James Taylor, as well as shows like Disney On Ice: Rockin' Ever After, at the 18,000-seat Verizon Arena. One of the best ways to see the city is on two wheels. Rent a bike from either Bobby's Bike Hike or Fike's Bikes; both Bobby's and Segway of Arkansas offer guided tours. The River Rail Electric Streetcar also makes it easy to travel around both Little Rock and North Little Rock for the fee of just one dollar. PHOTOS COURTESY OF LITTLE ROCK CONVENTION AND VISITORS BUREAU, OLD MILL PHOTO COURTESY OF ARKANSAS DEPARTMENT OF PARKS & TOURISM History and Heritage While Central Arkansas has many new enticements, La Petite Roche hasn't forgotten where she came from. History buffs will enjoy a stay at the Empress of Little Rock, a bed and breakfast housed in a Gothic Queen Anne-style mansion from 1888 (don't miss high tea on Sundays). Just as romantic is the Old Mill, a popular spot for photographers. This re-creation of a water-powered gristmill was featured in the opening credits of Gone With the Wind, and it's believed to be the only surviving structure featured in the film. The city is also home to major U.S. civil rights landmarks including the Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site - the only operating high school in the nation to receive such a designation. Across the street, a visitor center with interactive exhibits and a bookstore honors the "Little Rock Nine." During the 1957 desegregation of the school, these nine African American students attended classes under federal protection amid protests, violence, and opposition. Central High is part of the Quapaw Quarter, nine square miles encompassing Little Rock's oldest and most historic areas, including 15 National Register Historic Districts, the Governor's Mansion, and MacArthur Park. Every Mother's Day weekend, the Quapaw Quarter Association hosts a Spring Tour of Homes, and this year marks the tour's 50th anniversary. The area also boasts many historical museums. Make time to visit the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History, Historic Arkansas Museum, Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, and the Old State House Museum. Many of these museums are free or have a minimal entry fee.
