ONCE YOU’RE UP AND ABOUT, GRAB A LITTLE BREAKFAST NOSH ON YOUR WAY TO CITY BEER STORE, JUST A FEW BLOCKS FROM YOUR HOTEL. you can do your thing at either Club 6 or the Showdown. The dancing is always good at both places. Had enough? Walk a mere two blocks to the Good Hotel, nod off, and dream of little albino alligators. It’s now Friday evening. The Mission’s restaurant scene is one of the hottest in town, so beat the crowds by grabbing an early dinner. Try the moderately priced Monk’s Kettle for the incredible beer selection, Mr. Pollo for the $15 tasting menu, or Sunflower for very affordable Vietnamese food. Afterward, drift over to Revolution Cafe and tilt back a locally brewed Anchor Steam or a California wine while listening to the Friday First, put on those walking shoes. You’re gonna need ’em today. Head over to Brenda’s French Soul Food or Dottie’s True Blue Cafe. Both will have lines but are well worth the wait. After breakfast, make your way to Market Street and hop on the F train. Take one of the historic streetcars up to the intersection of Market and Castro and disembark in the one and only Castro District, the gay capital of America. While you stroll through this colorful neighborhood, making your way down 18th Street toward the Mission District, there’s a chance you’ll get checked out by someone of the same gender. Take this as a compliment. Once you arrive in the Mission District, meander down Valencia Street to window-shop the bookstores and boutiques. Make your way to Clarion or Balmy Alleys, or both, and check out the amazing murals. By this point, your feet may need a rest and your belly may be growling, so step into Mission Chinese Food for lunch. Not only has the place been called one of the best new restaurants in the U.S., it’s also quite affordable. Entrees hover around $10, and 75 cents from each entree is donated to the San Francisco Food Bank. After lunch, head over to Dolores Park where you can take a quick nap or watch San Francisco’s beautiful weirdos frolic in the sun.
