Adventure CASHINYOURDIAMONDS.COM Sell Your Unwanted Diamonds For Cash their tips through the deep powder that was once the territory of backcountry daredevils. Mt. Baker offers a couple of ungroomed intermediate runs on powder days (when there’s more than four inches and the temperature doesn’t rise above 29°F). Now regular lift skiers can enjoy safe powder runs without having to teeter over the edge of a double-diamond bowl or head into the trees of the side country. I’m new to powder skiing, but Baker’s whole scene, or lack thereof, has me relaxed. A typical overnight dump of five inches means a few lift-accessed runs will remain wild and full of fresh snow. In the first hour and a half we’ve skied ten different runs, two stocked with fresh powder, and waited approximately six minutes for lifts. Because Trust Matters With over 30 years of experience in the diamond business, you can feel confident that you are receiving maximum value for your jewelry from a discreet buyer you can trust. There is a downside to so much terrain and so few lines: You get tired fast. And who knew floating down a powder run could be so draining for the thighs? We make our way to the bottom half of the mountain and see a wood-and-stone cabin cradled in a forest-lined bowl with a few slopes leading to it. The new Raven Hut Lodge, with its pitched roof, heavy timber beams, and fresh cedar shingles, looks like the original Cascadia ski lodges from your grandparents’ black-and-white photos — back when the men wore wool pants, the women wool skirts, and they skied on wood. We enter the loftedceiling lodge, its interior brightly lit by towering windows and warmed by two massive stone fireplaces. Like the White Salmon Lodge at the mountain’s base, there are no TVs in Raven Hut. No blaring music or video game rooms for kids. It smells like burning cedar wood and barbecued brisket sandwiches, not sweaty ski boots. We settle in with a microbrew from Bellingham, and I wonder if I should even write a story about this secret hideout of powder, terrain, and no-frills skiing. But not to worry: Mt. Baker is one of those places that has a way of drawing a crowd, albeit small, that fits the environment just right. David Hanson writes about travel and the outdoors. He lives in Seattle. $155 to $165. theinnatmtbaker.com The North Fork Beer Shrine Just the Basics Call How to get there From Seattle, drive north on I-5 to 542 East in Bellingham. Innkeeper Carole MacDonald fills the dining room table with a breakfast of champions, especially if she’s whipping up her gigantic peach pancakes. The inn is 23 miles west of the ski area and 30 miles east of Bellingham. Rates from to speak to John Stafford personally. look like another roadside saloon, but don’t be fooled.
