Baker offers a couple of ungroomed intermediate runs on powder days (when there’s more than four inches and the temperature doesn’t rise above 29°F). Now regular lift skiers can enjoy safe powder runs without having to teeter over the edge of a double-diamond bowl or head into the trees of the side country. I’m new to powder skiing, but Baker’s whole scene, or lack thereof, has me relaxed. A typical overnight dump of ﬁve inches means a few lift-accessed runs will remain wild and full of fresh snow. In the ﬁrst hour and a half we’ve skied ten different runs, two stocked with fresh powder, and waited approximately six minutes for lifts. Like the White Salmon Lodge at the mountain’s base, there are no TVs in Raven Hut. No blaring music or video game rooms for kids. It smells like burning cedar wood and barbecued brisket sandwiches, not sweaty ski boots. We settle in with a microbrew from Bellingham, and I wonder if I should even write a story about this secret hideout of powder, terrain, and no-frills skiing. But not to worry: Mt.
