Confessions of a Tattoo Virgin How Richmond is instigating indelible support for the arts. R PHOTOS (FROM TOP) BY MAGUIRESPHOTO.COM, SCOTT ELMQUIST ichmond’s Jim Rothrock was a tattoo virgin for 62 years. “I’m a governor-appointed commissioner and I have an ink-free wife, children, and grandchildren,” Rothrock smiles. “A tattoo was not on my bucket list.” Then came CultureWorks. “We decided to offer real tattoos as optional benefits for our donors,” says John Bryan, president of the regional arts leadership organization. While there are less daring ways to show one’s support, Bryan says that “this tattoo confirms a person’s conviction that the arts are indelible and enduring components of great communities.” CultureWorks has partnered with River City Tattoo Company to make this nontraditional offer. Donors who give $150 to the foundation are eligible to receive permanent confirmations of their support for the arts. Rothrock was one of a dozen tattoo virgins — all Richmond notables — who displayed their indelible adornments at a CultureWorks From top: commissioner Jim Rothrock; attorney Brooks Smith’s three-line tattoo press conference in 2011. The group included Maggi Beckstoffer, president of MBM Marketing. “My husband was speechless for the first time in 20 years,” she says. Attorney Brooks Smith, then president of the Richmond Business Council, got his ink while the cameras rolled, declaring, “Rise up if you believe in something!” The image forever shared among an ever growing number of arts supporters is three parallel lines — a copy of the world’s oldest known tattoo, found on a glacier-frozen man. “This project is so important,” says Jessica Simmons, owner of River City Tattoo Company, who provides the pro bono tattoos through her nationwide network of tattoo artists. “It’s changed my life,” explains Rothrock. “I am so proud to permanently endorse the essential value of the arts.” CultureWorks 1906-A North Hamilton Street Richmond, VA 804.340.5280 richmondcultureworks.org usairwaysmag.com NOVEMBER 2012 77 http://www.MAGUIRESPHOTO.COM http://www.richmondcultureworks.org http://www.usairwaysmag.com
