T BY HANNAH SHERK Its vast archives keep to the museum’s promise to offer “Real people. Real stories. Real stuff.” The Museum of the Confederacy (MOC) is a history buff’s playground, housing the largest collection of Confederacy-related artifacts in the world. The museum carefully selects items for its thought-provoking The Museum exhibits from an immense store of of the Confederacy military and domestic items. Government documents, private letters and 1201 East Clay Street Richmond, VA journals, and a large collection of 855.649.1861 wartime paintings, maps, and photomoc.org graphs recreate the daily lives of the civilian and the soldier in a war-torn nation. The MOC isn’t your average historical museum, and it isn’t satisfied to keep visitors quiet as they view static displays. The museum invites you to step into history. Visitors can join a brown bag lunch discussion to exchange views on a historical event, or join a themed tour of the White House of the Confederacy. Just steps away from the MOC, the White House of the Confederacy has been restored to antebellum authenticity. Tours of the former executive mansion follow the historical figures who once walked its halls. A political, social, and military headquarters, the building saw the likes of Robert E. Lee and Abraham Lincoln, and was home to Jefferson Davis for four years. Committed to historical integrity, the museum and the White House symbolize the role of the Confederacy during one of America’s defining moments and one of the most tumultuous periods in its history. usairwaysmag.com NOVEMBER 2012 PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE MUSEUM OF THE CONFEDERACY 93 http://www.moc.org http://www.usairwaysmag.com
