Fishburne’s reputation for helping students
achieve is attracting more young men in grades
seven through 12 to this historic Waynesboro,
Virginia, institution. The 181 cadets registered for
2013–2014 make up the school’s highest enrollment in a decade. FMS was also recently voted
Best Independent School in the Shenandoah Valley by Virginia Living magazine, and its Junior
Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) program has been named an Honor Unit by the U.S.
Army every year since 1928 — longer than any
other school in the nation.
The secret is simple yet dynamic: a dedicated
staff and faculty provide a strong academic foundation and leadership training in a healthy mental
and physical environment, instilling timeless values such as personal honor, citizenship, and selfdiscipline. These high standards start with an 8
to 1 student-teacher ratio, ensuring each cadet gets
the support he needs.
The tradition of excellence at FMS goes back
to its founding in 1879, and Fishburne is Virginia’s
oldest accredited secondary school. Today, students benefit from both lively classroom discussions and the latest in computing and educational
technology. Courses include all the college prep
basics, as well as Advanced Placement in science
and math.
In addition to JROTC, color guard, and marksmanship, cadets enjoy activities including the CQ
Cadet newspaper and various athletics such as
basketball, lacrosse, and soccer. Fishburne is a
