MILITARY COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS Lifelong Brotherhood Family-like atmosphere ensures cadets make the grade at Lyman Ward Military Academy. By Wes Isley # Educating boys for solid futures is the heart of Lyman Ward Military Academy’s mission, and this historic institution located in rural Camp Hill, Alabama, makes every effort to help students reach their full potential. Mutual respect and a deep conviction in the abilities of each cadet are evident throughout this campus that more closely resembles a family than a boarding school. “We take pride in being a first-rate yet smaller school,” says Captain Andrew Erickson, Lyman Ward’s director of admissions and marketing. “And our tuition is very affordable.” With roughly 120 students, all boys, in grades six through 12, Lyman Ward’s small size means teachers and staff know each student by name. “You can’t get that kind of 174 Ward Circle support in a larger school,” says Erickson. Camp Hill, AL 256.896.4127 Such support plays out in everything from lwma.org a conversation between classes to a weekend 116 NOVEMBER 2013 usairwaysmag.com swimming trip or a group outing for pizza. Dr. Roy Berwick, Head of School and a Lyman Ward alumnus, says that the academy’s approach not only helps students excel at course work, it also builds strong character that will serve cadets well throughout their lives. “We provide an environment that helps students be their best academically, but we’re also committed to preparing young men for the overall work of life,” says Berwick. Every Lyman Ward student is partnered with an adult staff member who mentors that cadet throughout his time at the academy. Mentors help with homework, serve as personal confidants, and chaperone off-campus activities. In addition, adult TAC (Teach, Advise, Counsel) officers live in student barracks and provide further guidance. Staff and faculty also participate in regular “Walk the Talk” lunch sessions by sharing a personal life lesson and how they learned from it. “We talk about experiences that have shaped our character,” Erickson explains. “We’re honest about it, and kids really need that.” Academic excellence receives equal emphasis through mandatory study halls and an atmosphere that encourages struggling students to reach out to teachers for assistance.
