US Airways - November 2013 - (Page 123)
JROTC instructor and English teacher join the
team to ensure students’ application materials are
complete. The result? One hundred percent of the
class of 2013 was accepted into a four-year college or
university. Equally impressive, 77 percent of the 71
graduates earned scholarships totaling $7.3 million.
So respected is Randolph-Macon’s curriculum
and success rate, it has been deemed one of seven
Falcon Foundation Schools; these offer postgraduate scholarships to select students who hope to
attend the Air Force Academy the following year.
And for students who have their sights on becoming military officers or attending any U.S. service academy, there’s the High Flight program, an
intensive offering of science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) classes plus a physical
training program which, under the mentorship of
retired Air Force officers, helps them prepare for the
Candidate Fitness Assessment.
Of course, staying completely grounded does
little good for these future leaders. That’s why
Randolph-Macon offers an in-house flight-training
program. Thanks to two full-time flight instructors
and two Cessna 172 aircraft, 30 to 40 students can
enroll in the program each year, with five to seven
of them making solo flights. A few will even earn a
private pilot certification — before they learn to
drive a car.
For all its intensive focus on academics and Air
Force training, Randolph-Macon offers its students
plenty of time for athletics, with 20 varsity sports
and about a dozen at the middle school level. There
are also numerous opportunities for artistic expression: Randolph-Macon’s marching and concert
bands, among the best on the East Coast, have
performed at the St. Patrick’s Day Parades in New
York and Washington, DC, while its chorus and
drama departments give performances for the local
community. Whatever future endeavors they embark upon — the arts, the sciences, the military
— Randolph-Macon students are, without question,
prepared for takeoff.
