photos courtesy of riverside military academy — 28 states and 23 countries. The largest numbers of international cadets come from China, South Korea, Mexico, and Kazakhstan. As a result, cadets become keenly aware of the world beyond the United States, which is a rich part of their education. This cultural exposure coupled with a college-preparatory curriculum brings results. Riverside students’ AP exam scores and SAT scores both exceed the state average. Several current seniors are bona fide service academy candidates. And as of this year, there are six Riverside alumni attending West Point (the most from any single school), and one at Annapolis. At Riverside, students are equipped with more than just a sound college preparatory education. The mission of Riverside is to prepare ethical young men of character for success in college and in life through the provision of a rigorous academic program, leadership opportunities, competitive athletics, extensive cocurricular activities, and the structure and discipline inherent in a military college preparatory school environment. The Character Development program reinforces that mission by hosting distinguished speakers every other week, holding faculty-led seminars for cadets after each speech, and maintaining an Honor Code administered by cadets. It’s all a part of what retired Marine Colonel and Riverside president Dr. James H. Benson calls a “wholistic education.” Leadership and integrity are emphasized from the first hour of recruit orientation to the last hour of commencement, and expected in every aspect of life at Riverside. The Riverside cadet is expected to be a scholar and gentleman, one who demonstrates courtesy, social grace, and responsible citizenship. And come graduation, he is. usairwaysmag.com Clockwise from top left: riverside cadets; monthly military parades are held on maginnis Field; riverside’s 206acre campus located on Lake Sidney Lanier is one hour north of Atlanta’s HartsfieldJackson International Airport. november 2013 125 http://www.usairwaysmag.com
