Reverend Smythe, a stout Scotsman and ﬁrm believer in the value of high standards, personal accountability, and strong ideals, began then what is today St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy, a school with a legacy of shaping the character and inspiring the minds of young men. Though much has changed since 1884, the core of a St. John’s Northwestern education has not. Students today are still challenged and expected to reach for their full potential. In recent years, alumni have attended Georgetown University, Northwestern University, the United States Naval Academy, and West Point, among other highly regarded universities. Parker Phillips, a 2008 graduate, attributes a broad change of lifestyle to SJNMA’s inﬂuence: “I lacked the motivation and discipline to realize my true potential,” Phillips says. “The Academy laid out a pathway that I chose to follow, and through hard work and dedication I was able to take the skills I gained at St. John’s Northwestern and apply them in college.” Phillips, like more than a century of students before him, knows his success stems from the strength of character he built at SJNMA.
