Adventure
the art world. Commissioned artists
create work that engages with the architecture, design, and history of the park.
For Food: The West Village
This off-the-grid neighborhood takes
wandering to a new level. Nicknamed
Little Bohemia, the West Village is
lined with rows of brick townhouses,
19th-century brownstones covered in
vibrant green ivy, and curiously crooked
side streets that seem to appear out of
nowhere. It’s almost as if you’ve followed Alice down the rabbit hole.
Despite its absurdly high real-estate
price tag, the West Village evokes a
cozy, laid-back atmosphere that’s impossible not to like. Take Corner bistro
(331 West 4th Street) for example. This
burger and beer joint, with a sign lit
up like Amsterdam’s red-light district,
has been serving customers since 1961,
making it one of the last authentic
bohemian bars in the area.
Take advantage of the BYOB policy
at area favorites like the French bakery
and bistro Tartine (253 West 11th
Street) and oaxaca Taqueria (48
Greenwich Avenue). And you can’t go
wrong with a meal at the Fatty Crab
(643 Hudson Street), which sources
ingredients from local farmers and
producers to prepare its Malaysianinspired dishes.
As cliché as it sounds, New Yorkers
really do love their cupcakes. Indulge at
Sweet revenge (62 Carmine Street),
a small, European-style restaurant that
specializes in pairing international wine
and beer with its freshly baked artisanal
cupcakes.
For Fashion: NoLIta
Short for North of Little Italy, NoLIta
is a mix of SoHo spillover and pure
bliss, a picturesque cluster of rainbowcolored buildings, boutiques, and
bookshops. Firmly rooted in history,
both NoLIta and SoHo feature castiron architecture, cobblestone streets,
and lampposts dating to the turn of
the 20th century. But NoLIta has

taken a more modern route when it
comes to fashion.
Lining the streets around St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral, boutiques offer
one-of-a-kind trinkets you never knew
you needed. Only in NoLIta will you
find a boutique specializing in socks
(The Sock Hop, 248 Elizabeth Street)
two doors down from a store proudly
selling pajamas (bedhead Pajamas,
252 Elizabeth Street). Then there’s
resurrection (217 Mott Street), a small
shop resembling a full-room treasure
chest of vintage finds.
For original items without a hefty
price tag, browse through the weekend
noLIta market (Prince Street between
Mulberry and Mott Streets). Vendors
sell everything from thought-provoking
tees to intricate, handmade jewelry.
After browsing, slip into a good book
at mcnally Jackson (52 Prince Street),
known locally as McJ Books. Don’t be
surprised if it takes a minute to find
your bearings. McNally’s arranges its
two floors of literature by geographic
location. With its extensive travel
section, you may find yourself not in
fiction but in Europe. This bookworm’s
paradise also offers food for thought at
its on-site cafe.
