US Airways - November 2013 - (Page 6)

CEO Letter embark Thank You for Flying with US A Season of Thanks ★ At the end of this month, many of us will come together with family and friends to give thanks for what’s important to us. One group of people that US Airways is especially thankful for, and to whom we find several ways to show our appreciation, is our nation’s veterans. Throughout the year, we proudly provide volunteer and financial support to our local USOs and many veterans’ organizations, including the Charlotte Bridge Home in North Carolina and the Veterans Medical Leadership Council in Phoenix. Recently, we operated our 300th Honor Flight, transporting veterans to visit the World War II memorial and other sites in Washington, DC. Since 2006, US Airways has partnered with val neitzke, a volunteer with US Airways’ Do Crew, welcomed World War II veterans to Washington, DC, for the 300th Honor Flight on September 12. Honor Air, an organization that provides World War II veterans the opportunity, free of charge, to see the memorial built in their honor. Honor Flights are a great way to pay tribute to the men and women who valiantly served our country, and we are honored to be a part of these special flights. You can learn more about the 300th Honor Flight on page 12. US Airways also partners with Wreaths Across America, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to remember the fallen, to honor those who serve, and to teach children about the freedoms they enjoy. Every December, Wreaths Across America coordinates wreath-laying ceremonies at the final resting place of fallen soldiers on National Wreaths Across America Day. This year, on December 14, members of US Airways’ employee volunteer corps, the Do Crew, will recognize our fallen soldiers by placing wreaths in our hub cities of Phoenix, Philadelphia, Charlotte, and Washington, DC. Another way we thank our veterans every year is through our Sweet Delights Take Flight program. The Do Crew visits local veterans’ hospitals and facilities in our hub cities to distribute cookies, pies, and other baked goods. It’s one way we can “sweeten” the day of those who have served our country. Thanksgiving Day reminds us of the abundance, and need, in our country — and Veterans Day gives us all an opportunity to salute those who have served our nation. On behalf of the 32,000 employees of US Airways, thank you for flying with us today, and if you’re a veteran or active-duty service member, thank you for your service. We look forward to seeing you again soon and wish you safe and happy travels this holiday season. 6 november 2013 usairwaysmag.com photo by Max hirshfeld Doug Parker Chairman and CEO http://www.usairwaysmag.com
