Military Colleges and sChools The leadership skills learned at military schools are very transferable, and our graduates have a great track record of becoming leaders in whatever field they pursue. —Ray Rottman, executive director of the Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States 70 november 2013 usairwaysmag.com successful careers in business, science, education, and public service. “The leadership skills learned at military schools are very transferable, and our graduates have a great track record of becoming leaders in whatever field they pursue,” says Ray Rottman, executive director of the Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States (AMCSUS). “While the Association is very proud of recognizable graduates like Conrad Hilton, Donald Trump, and Norman Schwarzkopf, it is the example provided by the thousands of lesserknown graduates, men and women of character, which has left the most significant impact on our nation and the world.” In addition to important life skills and a strong moral base, cadets gain something else: lifelong friendships. Military schools enroll young men and women from across the U.S., and many also enroll international students from around the world. Despite the diverse mix, students build strong bonds as they learn and grow together. “My favorite thing about Valley Forge Military Academy and College is the camaraderie within the Corps of Cadets,” says cadet John Ensle, academy class of 2014. “We are part of a brotherhood and sisterhood. Going through the same challenges and experiences brings us closer together. We will share this bond for life.” Best of all, military schools serve students of all ages. Each type of school provides a unique learning environment, from universities with undergraduate and master’s programs to prep schools that enroll grades K–12. photoS (pRevioUS SpReAd CloCkwiSe fRoM top) CoURteSy of viRgiNiA teCh, RiveRSide MilitARy ACAdeMy, CUlveR ACAdeMieS, by woodS pieRCe/CoURteSy of viRgiNiA woMeNS iNStitUte foR leAdeRShip, floRidA AiR ACAdeMy, ANd fiShbURNe MilitARy SChool Clockwise from below: new mexico military Institute regimental band, Wentworth soccer, Citadel graduates, the classroom at Camden military Academy, and Admiral Farragut formation First and foremost, military schools offer a quality education. An early morning bugle call or “reveille” starts off a typical day for cadets, which includes a busy schedule of classes, physical training or “PT,” and extracurricular activities like sports, music, and the arts. This structured atmosphere fosters self-discipline and good time management, while supportive, dedicated faculty members encourage critical thinking. But developing well-rounded students means focusing on more than just academic achievement. Personal integrity, respect, and service are not abstract concepts at these schools — they are foundational values instilled in each cadet. Each school has its own code of conduct, and community service is strongly encouraged. Most importantly, military schools teach cadets to put those values into practice through hands-on leadership training. Each school boasts its own unique program, but the ability to be a team player and a responsible leader sets military school students apart. And while some graduates do choose to enter the armed forces, most go on to http://www.usairwaysmag.com
