According to Mozelle’s owner, Jennifer Manner, it’s about Southern classics infused with ﬂavors from around the world. The restaurant sits on a bustling corner in the Historic West End, where patio diners enjoy Winston-Salem’s sights and sounds from behind a glass of carefully curated wine. Mozelle’s has the charm and accessibility of a neighborhood restaurant, but the menu of a foodie paradise. Manner credits her executive chef, Janis Karathanas, with uncanny instinct. “She strikes the impossible balance between innovation and comfort food,” says Manner. And great food comes from great ingredients. “We don’t do frozen, packaged, and premade,” she says. While her menu changes seasonally, Manner always offers the mainstays: gourmet meat loaf with spicy collard greens, fried chicken with peach chutney, shrimp and grits, and the all-time customer favorite — tomato pie in a hand-rolled crust. Their list of house-made desserts features bourbon pecan bread pudding and coconut cream pie. Regulars know Mozelle’s secret: It’s dynamic. Intimate but lively, the venue is perfect for a business lunch or a ﬁrst date. “Very often on a balmy night I’ll look up and ﬁnd a cocktail party on the sidewalk,” says loyal patron Virginia Carlan. True to Southern hospitality, Manner will “treat you like a regular even if you’re not.” The atmosphere behind Mozelle’s makes it a place where, in Manner’s words, “It’s not just about the food.
