Giving Back By ivy lamB B 116 october 2012 anking customers are sure to have noticed the change from Wachovia storefronts to Wells Fargo. But, aside from the new logo, what does the merger mean? It means that Wachovia is now part of one of the nation’s largest banks, an institution that ranks number one on the American Customer Satisfaction Index. However, some things will remain the same. Wachovia was an influential business in the Winston-Salem community — look no further than the former Wachovia Tower in downtown for evidence. Today, Wells Fargo is picking up the baton, renewing the bank’s commitment to the City of Arts and Innovation through philanthropic giving, volunteerism, and more. Homegrown in North Carolina An integral part of Winston-Salem’s early history, Wachovia National Bank opened its doors in 1879 to serve the area’s growing manufacturing industries. The name Wachovia traces its roots to Old Salem’s Moravian pioneers, who named their land “Der Wachau” (creek along the meadow). Blending the work ethic of the Moravians with the energy and ambition of neighboring Winston’s early capitalists, Wachovia maintained its close connection to the city, even as it grew to become one of the largest banks in the Southeast. “In terms of the city’s founding influences, Wachovia was one of the legs of the stool, along with Hanes, Reynolds Tobacco, and Piedmont Airlines, among others,” says Stan Kelly, Wells Fargo regional president for the Carolinas.
