Helping Women The Women’s Fund of Winston-Salem showcases passion with a purpose. Women ess than 7 percent of philanthropic dollars are directed to programs that speciﬁcally support women and girls. These ﬁve diverse, passionate women founded The Women’s Fund in 2006. L BY MARTHA-PAGE ALTHAUS Fostering an interest in science But a group of women in Forsyth County is changing all that. The Women’s Fund of Winston-Salem raises money and awards grants to help local females reach their full potential. Fund members are from all walks of life: corporate and nonproﬁt employees, educators, community leaders, and even college students. And at more than 800 members strong, this collective philanthropic group proves that combining funds makes a big impact. Since 2007, The Women’s Fund has given nearly $750,000 to programs and initiatives that help Forsyth County women improve their economic, educational, physical, and emotional well-being. In 2010, The Women’s Fund released a report detailing the economic security of Forsyth County women. Titled “GenderLens,” it was the ﬁrst research of its kind to focus speciﬁcally on the needs of local women. Each year, the members vote on the distribution of grant funds. Past grant recipients include Communities in Schools of Forsyth County (their after-school workshops support 50 at-risk female high-school students), Forsyth Medical Center Foundation (its Girls on the Run program promotes exercise and healthy living for ages 6–11), and Dress for Success Winston-Salem (providing professional attire and support for unemployed women).
